In 2008, Superior HealthPlan became the first managed care organization in the nation to provide statewide health care to children and youth in foster care. Fast forward to today and Superior continues to set the standard for removing barriers and providing quality health care for both mental and physical health needs through the STAR Health program. This video explores major milestones and the positive impact STAR Health has on the more than 32,000 children and youth in foster care across Texas.  

STAR Health provides healthcare to children in the Texas foster care program. Superior HealthPlan offers the services under a contract with the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC). Superior works with many doctors, clinics and hospitals to care for children in foster care. 

STAR Health members can get regular checkups, exams, primary care and specialist care when needed. Superior wants to help all children in foster care get well and stay well.

STAR Health offers:

  • An Integrated Medical Home where each foster care child has access to Primary Care Providers (PCPs), behavioral health clinicians, specialists, dentists and vision services.
  • Care Coordination services to help understand benefits, get help with appointments, find transportation assistance and identify local community resources.
  • Training programs that provide clinical expertise and program information for families, caregivers, caseworkers and other child advocates.
