Texas Health Steps
Texas Health Steps, also known as Early and Periodic Screening Diagnosis and Treatment (EPSDT), provides regular medical and dental checkups at no cost for children and young adults in the STAR Health Program. It also offers other services like vaccines and vision and hearing screenings.
Texas Health Steps helps to:
- Find and treat your child’s medical and dental problems early.
- Make sure your child gets their vaccines.
- Give health education to keep your child healthy.
During a Texas Health Step checkup, the doctor will look at your child from head to toe, checking for health problems you may not know about. The doctor will also see if your child is growing and developing like other children their age. These checkups can help catch health problems before they get worse and are harder to treat. Regular medical checkups help make sure your child grows up healthy. All children newly enrolled in the STAR Health Program need a Texas Health Steps checkup within 30 days of enrollment and a dental checkup within 60 days.
