Dental Care and Your Coverage

Date: 04/08/25

Regular dental checkups are important for the child or young adult in your care to make sure their teeth and gums are healthy. Dental care helps prevent oral diseases and other health conditions. By seeing the dentist regularly, a problem can be found and taken care of right away.

Dental checkups need to start at age six months and should happen every six months through the age of 20 years old. There are many dentists and specialists to help you get the necessary services. Some of these services include:

  • Preventive treatment
  • Diagnostic treatment
  • Oral surgery
  • And more

STAR Health covers braces when they are a medical necessity.* If your child or young adult in your care got braces before enrolling in STAR Health, the plan covers medically necessary orthodontic treatment. The child or young adult must go to a Medicaid-approved provider for braces. If the office finds it is medically necessary, they will submit paperwork for continuation of care.

Members can go to any DentaQuest dentist for a checkup. You do not need a referral for regular dental checkups or other dental services. If you have questions about braces, dental benefits or need assistance scheduling an appointment visit the DentaQuest website or call DentaQuest at 1-888-308-4766.
