National Family Caregivers Month
Date: 11/22/24
The National Council on Aging recognizes National Family Careivers Month to honor family caregivers and raise awareness about caregiver issues. At Superior, we understand that caring for a senior family member or a family member with a disability can be a rewarding but challenging role. It's important to find ways to care for your loved one while also taking care of your own health and well-being.
As a caregiver, your role might include helping them with medications and doctor’s appointments, assisting with daily tasks and offering emotional support. This can bring you closer to the person you are caring for, but it can also be hard on you. We’ve gathered a few tips from the Caregiver Action Network to help you care for your loved one, and for yourself.
- Practice self-care. Getting exercise and enough sleep will make sure you are feeling your best and will benefit you and the person you are caring for.
- Keep medical information organized. Visit Superior’s Caregiver Organizational Tools webpage to download My Caregiver Journal. This guidebook can help you keep track of your loved one’s medical history, contact information for providers and emergency contacts, and more.
- Look for support from other caregivers. Utilize online communities or support groups.
- Watch out for signs of depression. If you are consistently tired or sad, talk with your doctor about options for managing depression.
- Give yourself credit. Caregiving is hard work and shows how dedicated you are to your family or loved one.
