Use the Nutrition Facts Label to Balance Your Diet

Date: 03/22/24

The food you eat is important when it comes to your overall health. The Nutrition Facts label on food items lists what nutrients are in that food to help you make healthier choices for your diet.

This label lists the amount of different nutrients that are contained in your food, including:

  • Calories
  • Fats
  • Sugars
  • Vitamins
  • Sodium
  • Minerals

You should eat foods that are higher in vitamins and minerals, and lower in fats and sugars. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration website provides information about the percent daily value (%DV) that is listed on the Nutrition Facts label. The %DV can help you make decisions about what foods you should have more or less of throughout the day. For example, if the cereal you have for breakfast has a lot of sugar, choose foods that have less sugar for other meals later in the day.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture website MyPlate.gov offers a list of cost-effective, healthy recipe options. You can even search for specific recipes that have more or less of certain nutrients, like low sodium meals, to help you balance your diet.
