Texas CANS 2.0 Assessment Changes to CANS 3.0

Date: 12/31/24

Effective 1/1/2025 the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) will transition from the Texas CANS 2.0 Assessment to the Texas CANS 3.0 Assessment. The Texas CANS 3.0 Assessment is a comprehensive trauma-informed behavioral health evaluation. It gathers information about the child and young adult to assist them in identifying services that will help them reach their goals. While maintaining the core function of evaluating a child and young adult’s needs and strengths, the new version of the Texas CANS Assessment is a more comprehensive version to help provide effective care to the child and young adult.

STAR Health members, 3 to 17 years old, are required to get a Texas Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) 3.0 Assessment within 30 days of joining Superior and then re-administered every year thereafter. The Texas CANS 3.0 Assessment must be performed by a certified Texas CANS 3.0 Assessment provider.

For more information, or to get help scheduling a Texas CANS 3.0 Assessment, call Member Services at 1-866-912-6283. (Relay Texas/TTY 1-800-735-2989). Our team is available Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Central Time.

Please note, STAR Health members who are 20 years old and younger need to have a medical checkup within 30 days and a dental checkup within 60 days of joining the STAR Health program. These check ups are in addition to the Texas CANS 3.0 Assessment.
